6 – 9 October 2019, FORMEC – COFE, Sopron, Hungary – with TECH4EFFECT session

The 52 edition of the symposium ‘Forestry Mechanization’ or FORMEC will be held together with the 42 edition of the Council on Forest Engineering (COFE). This year TECH4EFFECT has its’ own session at FORMEC! Also this is the first time for a COFE meeting taking place in Europe – in Sopron, Hungary. Join also the field trip to Forchtenstein in Austria to attend AUSTROFOMA, the only Austrian forestry machine and device demonstration where all the machines on display are shown performing real-life tasks.

The TECH4EFFECT session on Monday, 7th October starts at 10:30 in Room1 and includes the following presentations:

  • Productivity and fuel consumption of heavy forwarders under different configurations: benchmarks from fleet-level long-term records (one million loads). Raffaele Spinelli, Angelo Conrado de Arruda Moura (A-0071)
  • Productivity and Environmental Impacts of Cable-assisted Logging – A case study in southern Oregon, USA. Woodam Chung, Brett Morrissette, Preston Green, Ben Leshchinsky, Kevin Bladon, Jeff Hatten, John Sessions (A-0117)
  • A micro-catchment approach to measuring surface run-off after cable logging. Bruce Talbot, Omar Mologni, Nicholas Clarke, Marek Pierzchala, Rasmus Astrup  (A-0152)
  • Assessing Cable Tensile Forces of Winch-Assisted Forwarders on Steep Terrain under Real Working Conditions. Thomas Holzfeind, Christian Kanzian, Karl Stampfer, Franz Holzleitner  (A-0061)
  • Factors Affecting Productivity and Utilisation of Winch-Assist Machines: Six Case Studies in New Zealand and Canada. Cameron Leslie, Colin Koszman, James Hunt, Rien Visser, Hunter Harrill, Dominik Roeser (A-0115)
  • Flat and wet: Cable yarding on sensitive soils in Europe – motivations, challenges and potential. Gernot Erber, Raffaele Spinelli, Giovanna Ottaviani Aalmo, Dirk Jaeger, Marian Schönauer, Stephan Hoffmann, Bruce Talbot, Karl Stampfer (A-0054)

Don’t miss the keynote from our coordinator Rasmus Astrup on Tuesday morngin:

  • A-0193 Digitalization of forest harvesting: the potential for improved environmental and production efficiency; Rasmus Astrup, Room 1, 8:00.

Several posters are also based on TECH4EFFECT:

  • A-0021: Smart sensing technology for predicting forest road’s bearing capacity (Franz Holzleitner et al.)
  • A-0098: Indicator based assessment of trafficability of forest roads (Marian Schönauer et al.)
  • Coppice after 3 different cutting systems: growth capacity and mortality (Carolina Lombardini et al.)

  • Forests for people
  • Forests and climate change
  • Forests and forest products for a greener future
  • Biodiversity, ecosystem services and biological invasions
  • Forests, soil and water interactions

Publication: Spatial distribution of the potential forest biomass availability in Europe

European forests are considered a crucial resource for supplying biomass to a growing bio-economy in Europe. This study aimed to assess the potential availability of forest biomass from European forests and its spatial distribution. We tried to answer the questions (i) how is the potential forest biomass availability spatially distributed across Europe and (ii) where are hotspots of potential forest biomass availability located?

Verkerk from EFI et. al analysed the total availability of forest biomass and spatial distribution of woody biomass potential for 39 European countries. They found out that the distribution of biomass potentials that are currently unused only partially coincides with regions that currently have high levels of wood production.

27 – 31 May 2019, LIGNA 2019, Hannover, Germany

For the third time the Wood Industry Summit will be at LIGNA 2019. Taking place from 27 to 31 May in Hannover, Germany (hall 26), the summit focuses on “Access to Resources and Technology”. It is a well-established showcase for the forestry and wood industries organized by our partner KWF (German Forestry Council) together with Deutsche Messe.

Meet Bruce Talbot from NIBIO giving ‘An overview of technologies for monitoring the impact of forest machines on the soil
in Hall 26, Stand H28 on 31 May. 2019, 11:15 AM – 11:45 AM.

Have a look at the event website for more details: LIGNA 2019

23 – 24 May 2019, Österreichische Forsttagung, Seckau, Austria

Austrian Foresters are meeting this year in ‘Stift Seckau’ close to Knittelfeld to discuss forests and climate change. Gernot Erber from BOKU has been selected to present our TECH4EFFECT project poster. Registration is open until 3. May!

Check out the event page for more details!

17 – 19 May 2019, Forlener, Erba, Italy

Our partner CONAIBO is going to attend the italian trade fair FORLENER from 17 to 19 May. Vitit the “Lario Fiere” exhibition centre in Erba (Lombardy Region, around 50km from Milan) to meet with them and pick up some TECH4EFFECT flyers!

As the main Italian fair focusing on the forest-wood energy chain, FORLENER (Forest-Wood-Energy) is covering the whole value chain of its products and services

  • Forest management and plantations of fast-growth species
  • machinery and equipment for cut, pick-up and first manufacture of timber
  • boilers, stoves and chimneys (wood as an energy source at household, communities, industries levels)
  • technologies for the production of pellets
  • fire fighting equipment and safe working devices

Visit the FORLENER website for more details.
